Counterfeit Money in Champaign-Urbana
July 07, 2013

The Champaign-Urbana area has seen a large increase recently in the amount of counterfeit U.S. currency  being presented to local merchants.  In the past, it was common to see smaller bills being bleached and reprinted into larger denominations.  In the past months, we have seen a large increase in the number of smaller denominations being printed, including $5’s, $10’s, $20’s, and $50’s; $100’s also continue to be produced.  The bills are printed on heavier parchment-quality paper, which gives them a more realistic feel.  These bills are used to pay for goods and services, and often for food delivery and at gas stations.

Local merchants, as well as anyone that handles money on a regular basis, are encouraged to become familiar with the extensive security features that are present on the currency currently in circulation.  These security features are not present on the counterfeit bills.

A merchant’s eyes are the best tool to combat this growing problem.  Look at the money that you are receiving.  Look for the watermarks, the security stripe, and the color shifting ink.  If a merchant is not familiar with the security features, contact your local police department or the local office of the U.S. Secret Service for a brochure.  The “Counterfeit Detection Pens” are not a reliable tool and their use is not recommended.
