Homicide at 23rd and Vinton Street

On Friday, October 18th, 2013 at 9:40 p.m. officers responded to 23rd and Vinton Street for a man down. Officers located the victim, 19 year old Julius Vaughn. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

June 22, 2013

STATUS: SOLVED

On Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 9:57 a.m. officers responded to 11421 Shirley Street for a “check the well being” call. When officers arrived, they located two parties inside the residence, deceased. The victims have been identified as Roger Brumback, and Mary Brumback, of Omaha. This incident is being investigated by the Homicide Unit. There is no additional information at this time.

Homicide at 1910 Y Street
August 23, 2012

UPDATE 9/14/12

On August 23, 2012 at 8:22 pm Omaha Police Officers responded to 19th & Y Streets to investigate a shooting. Upon their arrival, they found 63 year old Gilberto Hernandez-Vazquez lying in the street in front of 1910 Y Street suffering from a gunshot wound.  He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  A homicide investigation was launched and Omaha Police are seeking the public’s assistance in their investigation.

At the time of the shooting, Gilberto was pushing his ice cream cart around the neighborhood, selling ice cream to the residents.  Gilberto was a common fixture in the 19th & Y neighborhood and was known by most al the neighbors, frequently speaking to the residents while making his rounds in the neighborhood.  Residents who live in the area are saddened by the news that Gilberto was shot and killed in their neighborhood.  The Homicide Unit is following up on all leads received in this investigation.  Investigators believe there may have been persons that were I the area and may have seen something and have not spoken with detectives.  Any and all information is considered important.  Everyone with information is strongly encouraged to call the Homicide Unit, no matter how trivial it may seem.

March 13, 2008

STATUS: SOLVED

On Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 5:48 p.m. officers were called to 303 North 54th Street to investigate a homicide.  Officers located a resident, 11 year old Thomas Hunter, and the housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman, inside the residence deceased.

Detectives have learned that a suspicious male, dark or olive skin complexion, 5` 8" - 5` "10, average to stocky build, with short to medium length dark hair, late 20`s to late 30`s was seen walking in the area prior to the reported homicide. This same person may have exited the below listed SUV. That person was wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and was carrying a dark colored satchel or briefcase over his shoulder.

Detectives would like to interview this person who was seen in the neighborhood by witnesses.

Witnesses reported a gray or silver Honda CR-V (or a similar SUV), with no front license plate, in the area around the time of the homicides.

Homicide at 6201 Ames Avenue
February 21, 2006

On Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 12:54 p.m. officers were called to 6201 Ames Avenue for a man who was down.  When officers arrived they located the victim, Waddell C. Robinson, suffering from critical injuries.  Waddell was transported by rescue squad to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition.  He later died at the hospital.

This incident occurred during the mid-afternoon hours in an area that contains many businesses, homes and traffic.  Some witnesses have provided a description of an unknown black male who was seen running from the scene shortly after this incident.  This black male was possibly wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black baggy pants.  Detectives are requesting to speak to any individuals who may have knowledge of the identity of this black male and his movements, or knowledge of any events relating to this homicide investigation.

Homicide at 42nd and Redman Avenue
July 15, 2005

On Friday, July 15, 2005 at 7:08 p.m. officers were called to 42nd and Redman Avenue to investigate a shooting.  When officers arrived they located the victim, Brian L. Walker, just west of 42nd and Redman Avenue suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  Brian was transported by rescue squad to the Nebraska Medical Center where he later died.

This crime took place during the early evening hours when several individuals were outside who witnessed this homicide. Detectives know that not everyone in the area stayed to be interviewed or contacted the Omaha Police Department in order to provide detectives with the information they have. Detectives have received cooperation from many witnesses, but would like to talk to other individuals that were in the area of Cubby`s and the 99 cent store.

The police are seeking the cooperation of the witnesses and the community to bring this case to a successful conclusion.

Homicide in the area of 29th and Parker Street - up to $10,000 REWARD
July 11, 2005

On Monday, July 11, 2005 at 11:34 p.m. officers were called to the area of 29th & Parker Street to investigate shots fired.  While en route to the call it was upgraded to a shooting.  Officers located the victim, 5-year-old LaSandra "Precious" Coleman, inside the vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  She was transported to the Creighton University Medical Center with a critical injury.  LaSandra was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Detectives determined that LaSandra was riding in a car, with her family and a friend, while it was turning north at 29th and Parker Street when gunshots were fired in their direction.  The gunfire shattered the vehicles rear window and struck LaSandra.

There have been reports of individuals running in the area around the time of the shooting.

Homicide in the area of 26th and Jefferson
September 18, 1983

At approximately midnight on September 18th, 1983, Karlena Tolston was brutally raped and shot in the park of 26th and Jefferson resulting in her and her unborn baby`s death.

Karlena was found the next morning in the same park. After the investigation there were no witnesses of the act and no evidence to lead them in the right direction.

Because of the gun shots, police believe there should be some witnesses who saw or at least heard what happened in the park that night.
