Jewelry Theft at Fred Meyer
December 26, 2014

The Juneau Police Department is looking for a Grinch who stole Christmas, or at least stole Christmas gifts. A disabled man who lives on a fixed income had saved up to buy his wife a pendant and matching earrings for Christmas this year. The evening of Christmas Eve he went to Fred Meyer and purchased the items. After the man paid for the jewelry he was struggling with some mobility issues and either dropped the bag containing the jewelry or looked away from the cart at the wrong time. Some then took the bag containing the jewelry, worth $700.

With the help of the receipt and Fred Meyer staff this picture of a similar pendant was located. The earrings match the pendant with a small diamond above oval cut Tanzanite.

The vehicle was found in the Fred Meyer parking lot by a Juneau Police Department Community Service Officer on October 21, at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

The discovery may have caused the suspect to abandon the vehicle before he or she planned. There was a great deal of personal property in the vehicle that either belonged to the suspect or was stolen in other incidents. Multiple Gas Siphonings
October 17, 2014

Between September 18th and the 24th, several Juneau residents reported gas siphoned from vehicles. There was 44 gallons taken from the 1900 block of Lemon Creek Road, 40 gallons from the 1700 block of Glacier Highway and 5 gallons from the 4200 block of North Douglas.

All of the vehicles involved were built in the mid-1990s. Vehicles built after 2000 often have a valve that shuts off gas if a vehicle rolls. The valve is a fire protection device that also prevents someone from pushing a hose into the gasoline. JPD recommends drivers of vehicles built before the year 2000 consider a locking gas cap, especially if gas has already been stolen. Thieves will tend to return to a vehicle where they have previously been successful.

Car Rifling on Cinema Drive
October 10, 2014

On September 27, 2014, at about 10:15 in the evening, a woman reported someone had entered her vehicle and taken an Apple Macbook and a Yamaha trumpet. There were no signs of forced entry. The theft happened while the woman was at the movie theater at 9091 Cinema Drive.

JPD would like to remind movie-goers that their vehicles are an attractive target since thieves know the person will be gone for a defined period of time. Those drivers should take extra precautions to make sure vehicles are locked and not to leave valuables within view if someone were to look into the car. One option is to lock valuables in the trunk of a car, which is much more difficult for thieves to access and usually won`t be accidentally left unlocked as can happen with passenger doors.

Missing Vehicle
October 03, 2014

Those associates did not report Spaulding as being missing or endangered but JPD officers would like to confirm that she is safe.

September 19, 2014

STATUS: SOLVED

A witness reported seeing a male suspect wearing a green Carhartt style coat and having short, brown hair fleeing the area carrying items in his arms.

Officers searched the area and found a new watch, apparently dropped by the suspect, between Costco and a building containing two businesses near the automotive service end of Costco.

The first alarms went off when the suspect broke into the jewelry case. It appears the suspect had hidden inside the store prior to closing.

JPD is releasing several pictures of the stolen jewelry, including a photo of a $4,000 dollar men’s watch.

A Juneau woman did post watches for sale on a Facebook page called Juneau Buy-Sell within hours of the burglary. A JPD Detective has examined those watches and they are not from Costco and were legitimately acquired. No further tips about that posting are needed.

The investigation showed someone likely used a tool to pry open the back door of the residence. Multiple jewelry items were taken, totaling about $25,000 in value.

Some of the jewelry items taken were distinctive, there is a tennis bracelet with diamonds around the entire length with “S” shaped links. There are earrings with an eagle’s head. The suspect took an anniversary ring with one large stone in the center and smaller stones set in a ‘braid’ pattern around the ring. A picture of a very similar ring is being released so that citizens can watch for that item.

JPD would like citizens to be aware of anyone they meet who currently has a large amount of jewelry to sell without and adequate explanation. That jewelry could include the pieces noted above and multiple other pieces stolen from the residence.

Theft of a Gold Nugget on Front Street
August 22, 2014

STATUS: SOLVED

UPDATE 8/25/14

The picture of the suspect who took a gold nugget from a downtown Juneau jewelry store generated a great deal of attention over the weekend and multiple tips about the suspect`s identity. One of the people interested in the press was the suspect himself who called the jewelry store and provided a credit card number to pay for the gold nugget. Investigators will now work with the prosecutor`s office, examine the suspect`s criminal record, and do additional research to determine what, if any criminal charges, will be filed. Tipsters quoted a Facebook account that put the suspect, a former Juneau resident, in Juneau to fish the annual derby. His name is not being released pending a decision about charges.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 10th, 2014, at about 7:30 in the evening a man who appeared to be in his sixties took a gold nugget worth almost five thousand dollars from a jewelry store in the 200 block of Front Street. An employee of the store says the same man made a purchase the day before providing the name of George Bentsen for that transaction. JPD patrol officers have been unable to locate a George Bentsen in Juneau.

Vandalism at Dzantiki Heeni Middle School
August 01, 2014

STATUS: SOLVED

UPDATE:

On 08/01/2014, JPD officers were able to identify the 5 juveniles who entered DZMS and caused the damage. Parents of the juveniles contact JPD to report that their children might have been involved with the incident. The juveniles were identified as a 16 year old male, a 10 year old male, an 8 year old male, a 7 year old male, and a 6 year old male. Interviews with the juveniles have either occurred, or are pending.

No further assistance is required by the public.

On July 26th, 2014, at about 8:30 in the evening a group of five or six children, ranging in age from seven to thirteen years old appear to have been involved in causing a small explosion behind Dzantiki Heeni Middle School. The explosion was from a black nylon bag with the brand label of Trailmaker Equipment. The cans inside consisted of three cans of Axe body spray and one can of Old Spice spray. The bag had been set on fire which caused the cans to explode.

The same group of children is believed to have been involved in entering the school causing damage to a window that will cost a thousand dollars to repair. The suspects also appear to have pried open a vending machine, taking snacks. Wrappers matching the snacks taken were later found at the athletic fields.

The suspects were recorded by surveillance cameras. Because of the youth of the suspects those pictures are not being released to the public. The Juneau Police Department is instead hoping to identify an adult who is familiar with the children who live in the area of the school. JPD hopes that adult will volunteer to try and help JPD identify the children so that appropriate contact with the parents, the school administrators where the children attend school, and juvenile justice authorities can happen.

JPD would also ask that parents who live in the area of the school ask their own kids about who is responsible for the incident. JPDtype of behavior will discuss what happened and will tell other children.
