On June 14, 2014, at about 9:30 a.m., a racial incident marred the close of Celebration 2014. The incident happened at the end of Saturdays parade. Native veterans acted as flag bearers and led the parade through downtown Juneau. Then the veterans formed a corridor on Willoughby Avenue next to Centennial Hall for the dancers to pass through as they finished the parade.
A white male grabbed the American flag out of the hands of a 67 year old native man. The white male yelled racial slurs at the native man and the crowd and attempted to spit on the flag. He then tried to run off with the flag. People in the area wrestled the flag away from the suspect who then ran away toward Whittier Street. The suspect also shoved people as he ran away, including a 53 year old native woman. Two Juneau Police Department officers on bikes and one in a patrol car searched the area but could not find the suspect. Now JPD needs the publics assistance in identifying the man responsible for the incident.
The suspect is described as between 30 and 50 years old. He was wearing a lighter toned multi-colored knit hat under the hood of a dark, possibly blue, jacket.
Many people were taking pictures and video of the dancers going through the flag corridor. Crime Line is offering a reward for a picture, video, or other information that leads to the identification of the suspect. Even if there is no video of the incident itself it is possible that someone documented the presence of the man in the crowd prior to the incident.

At the time of the report a hotel employee said a manager would contact the men, who were returning to England the next day, about the situation.
The Crime Line Board members acknowledge that this theft from international travelers shooting a documentary in Alaska casts Juneau in such a particularly negative light. Crime Line is will to pay a reward for information leading to the identification of anyone involved in the theft.

The Juneau Police Department has a long history of cases where the thefts of firearms are ultimately linked to drug users. Typically when someone motivated by getting money for drugs commits a firearm theft there is an immediate attempt to sell the stolen item for a fraction of its value for quick cash. Someone selling guns in this situation may not have a reasonable explanation for having so many guns to sell at once, may try and sell the guns out of a car, may have ground off serial numbers, and may be unwilling to provide identification.
JPD is asking for tips about these particular guns or anyone selling firearms in a way that indicates the items are likely stolen. Officers find license plate numbers and physical descriptions to be particularly helpful when reported.
Officers of the Juneau Police Department have received reports that individuals frequenting the downtown bars may be acting in coordination as part of a pattern of behavior designed to intimidate and even assault other bar patrons. The behavior appears to be bullying in nature and JPD would like to address the activity as soon as possible.
JPD has received information that there may be specific individuals who are instigating the behavior. When officers have attempted to gather information some people have expressed a concern that they may be harassed by the unnamed instigators for talking to police.
JPD is hoping to solicit information, including anonymous tips, about anyone suggesting or inspiring two or more people to harass, intimidate, or assault others in the downtown bar environment. Crimeline is completely anonymous and someone reporting information may be eligible for a reward.
