Crime Line Myths
MYTH: Portsmouth Crime Line is a police-sponsored program.
FACT: Portsmouth Crime Line is funded entirely by private donations from concerned citizens and companies. Our all-volunteer citizen board administers the program, raises funds and approves rewards for tips leading to arrest, recovery of stolen property or seizure of drugs. Portsmouth Police Department does supply a police liaison to help us disperse tips to the correct unit or investigator, but the police department does not sponsor or fund our program. Our relationship with the Portsmouth Police Department is simple: We Are Community Partners.
MYTH: Tipsters need to testify in court to collect their reward.
FACT: Tipsters who call Portsmouth Crime Line are never asked to give their name and are not required to testify in court to collect a reward for their tip. Anonymity has been and will always play a key role in the success of our program.
MYTH: The Portsmouth Crime Line doesn't pay cash for rewards.
FACT: If Portsmouth Crime Line did not follow through on its promise to pay cash rewards for tips leading to arrest, recovery of stolen property or seizure of drugs, it would never have survived as long as it has. Our organization prides itself on making a difference in our community and we always keep our promise to pay a cash reward of up to $1000 for eligible tips.
