Retail Thefts in Champaign
January 07, 2013

The Champaign Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying a suspect who committed three retail thefts. 

• The first theft occurred on September 3 at CVS, located at 243 S. Mattis Avenue, Champaign. 

• The second theft occurred the same day at Meijer, located at 2401 N. Prospect Avenue, Champaign. 

• The third theft occurred on September 13 at the same CVS location. 

Liquor was taken in all three thefts.  The suspect is a heavy set black male, who was wearing glasses and bracelets in all three incidents.  If you know this suspect or have any information, notify Crime Stoppers!

Home Invasion, Armed Robbery, Murder in Champaign
December 30, 2012

Crime Stoppers and the Champaign Police Department are seeking information regarding an incident involving home invasion, armed robbery, and first degree murder. 

The incident occurred at approximately 7:22 p.m. on Monday, December 17th, in the 200 block of East Roper Street, Champaign.  Officers responded to a  scene in which two adult males had been shot.  One of the victims later succumbed to his injuries.  One of the victims and a witness advised that two black male suspects entered the residence, armed with guns and firing shots, and demanded money.  One of the suspects took cash from one of the victims, and the suspects then left the residence.  The suspects are described as two black males wearing black hooded sweatshirts, with scarves covering their faces.

Retail Burglaries in Mahomet

This week, Champaign County Crime Stoppers is seeking information regarding a series of burglaries that occurred in Mahomet.

During the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 22nd) an unknown person or persons forced entry into five businesses in  Mahomet. Three of the businesses are located on Main Street, and two are located in Eastwood Plaza.  The suspect(s) forced entry to the businesses by prying open doors or breaking windows. The Mahomet Police Department is seeking any information you may have with regards to these crime.

Purse Snatching on UI Campus
December 17, 2012

On Saturday, December 8th, at approximately 9:47 p.m., a robbery occurred on campus in front of the Siebel Center, located at 201 North Goodwin Avenue, Urbana. The female victim advised University of Illinois police officers that as she was riding her bicycle outside of the main entrance to Siebel Center, a male walked past her and grabbed her purse from her arm. The male suspect then ran northbound.

A short time later, officers were able to locate and recover the purse and its contents, with the exception of the money, near the Coordinated Science Lab (CSL), located at 1308 W. Main, Urbana.

The U of I Police Department continues to seek information regarding the identity and whereabouts of the suspect. The suspect is described as a medium to dark-skinned black male in his mid-20’s, between 5’05” and 5’09” tall, with a small to medium build. He was last seen wearing a red knit-type hat with single red braided material hanging down on each side near the ears; the hat also had a white interior, and the bill was folded up above the suspect’s head. He was also wearing a dark orange or red sweatshirt with dark pants or jeans.



Armed Robbery of Champaign Convenience Store

Crime Stoppers and the Champaign Police Department are seeking information regarding an armed robbery that occurred on Thursday, November 29th, at 11:50 p.m. at the Circle K located at 2315 West Springfield Avenue, Champaign.

The suspects are two black males. Each was wearing a white scarf or handkerchief to cover his face. They were both described as being short with a medium or slim build. One of the suspects was armed with a large butcher knife. After the robbery, the suspects fled south on Kenwood Road.

Use of Stolen Credit Card in Champaign

The Champaign Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying a suspect using a stolen credit card on October 20, 2012.  The victim last possessed her credit card at the Dollar Tree in Champaign.  The credit card was used to make numerous fraudulent purchases at various locations (Exxon Mobil, Footlocker, JC Penney, Gordmans, and Best Buy) in Champaign.  According to the surveillance video, the suspect is a black male.  Images taken from the surveillance video are provided below. Aggravated Battery near UI Camput

Crime Stoppers and the Champaign and University of Illinois Police Departments are seeking assistance in identifying a suspect in an aggravated battery.
 
On Saturday, November 10th, the victim was walking westbound between the parking garage at the corner of Sixth and John Street and the church at the corner of Sixth and Daniel Street in Champaign.  He was struck in the head from behind and severely battered, causing damage to his mouth and ribs.  The victim believes there to be more than one assailant.

Theft of Wallet and Use of Stolen Credit Cards in Champaign
November 17, 2012

Crime Stoppers and the Champaign Police Department are seeking assistance in identifying the suspect in the theft of a wallet and the subsequent use of stolen credit cards.

On Monday, September 10th, the victim’s wallet was stolen from her purse while she was shopping at Hobby Lobby in Champaign.  Several credit cards from the wallet were then used to make fraudulent purchases at various locations (including Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy) in Champaign and at various locations in Kankakee.  According to surveillance video, the suspect in these incidents is a black female.  Images from surveillance video are provided below.

Theft From Mahomet IGA
November 11, 2012

Crime Stoppers and the Mahomet Police Department are seeking information regarding a series of retail thefts that have occurred at the Mahomet IGA since late August. The suspect has entered the Mahomet IGA on at least four occasions, and has stolen top shelf liquor by concealing the bottles in his clothing. The most recent theft was committed on Wednesday, October 31st.

The suspect is described as a white male with long blonde hair, approximately 5’7” tall, and weighing approximately 190 lbs. During the most recent occurrences, he wore a stocking cap (possibly a Dallas Cowboys stocking cap), a dark colored coat, and blue jeans. On one occasion, he was seen leaving the
IGA in an older dark colored pickup truck with a partial license plate number of “9552”. During the more recent incidents, he was seen leaving the area in a small red Pontiac car with a spoiler on the trunk. The car had a license plate number beginning with “A59” or “A79”.

Stolen Wallet and Use of Stolen Credit Card

On Wednesday, September 12th, University of Illinois police officers were dispatched to C.R.C.E. (Campus Recreation Center East), located at 1102 West Gregory Drive, Urbana, to take a burglary report. 

The victim reported that at approximately 6:30 p.m., he had entered the men’s locker room and secured his belongings in a locker.  He returned around 7:50 p.m. and found that the locker had been broken into, and his wallet and cell phone were stolen. 

It was later determined that between the hours of 6:49 p.m. and 7:26 p.m. the same evening, the stolen credit card was used to make fraudulent purchases at a Marathon gas station in Urbana and at Meijer and Wal-Mart in Champaign.

Burglaries at Market Place Mall
October 29, 2012

Between the hours of 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 21st, and 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 22nd, two cellular phone kiosks inside Market Place Mall were burglarized. The burglaries took place after the mall closed. Both the method and point of entry are currently undetermined.

The T-Mobile and Verizon kiosks reported that secured storage cabinets were forced open, and numerous cell phones were taken.

$500,000 Vandalism Damage at Ultimate Upholstery
October 22, 2012

On Monday, October 15th, Champaign police officers were called to Ultimate Upholstery, located at 2714 North Mattis Avenue, regarding a report of criminal damage. Sometime between 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14th and 7:30 a.m. on Monday, October 15th, unknown suspects entered the business and damaged vehicles, computers, cleaning equipment and upholstery materials. The damage estimate is approximately $500,000. The suspects obviously spent a great deal of time inside the business. 

Purse Snatching in Urbana
October 15, 2012

On Monday, October 8th, at approximately 5:47 p.m., officers from the U of I Police Department responded to a report of a robbery in the 1000 block of Clark Street in Urbana, near the intersection of Clark Street and Goodwin Avenue. The female victim reported that a black male on a bicycle grabbed her purse as he was riding past her. He then fled northbound on Goodwin Avenue.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 20 years of age, 6’0” tall, medium build, and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. The victim advised that there was another black male riding a bicycle in front of the suspect, but he did not participate in the robbery. She was unable to provide any further description of the second black male.

Taken were the victim’s purse and its contents. Below is a security surveillance photo of the suspect and the second subject.

Theft of iPad on MTD bus

The Champaign Police Department and Crime Stoppers are seeking assistance in identifying the suspect in an incident involving the theft of an iPad.  The theft occurred at approximately 11:51 a.m. on Monday, August 13th, near the intersection of University Avenue and Randolph Street.

The victim was a passenger on an MTD bus.  The suspect, who was also a  passenger, grabbed the iPad from the victim’s open backpack as the suspect was exiting the bus.  According to the victim and surveillance video, the suspect is a black male, possibly in his 30’s, medium build – approximately 5’9” and 160 lbs., with black hair,  brown eyes, and possibly light facial hair.  He was wearing a red letterman or varsity-style jacket with white sleeves, with patches present on both the right and left sleeves and the left breast of the jacket.  The suspect left the area on foot.

Burglary & Use of Stolen Debit Cards

The Champaign Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance regarding a vehicle burglary incident and the subsequent unauthorized use of stolen debit cards.  The vehicle burglary is believed to have occurred between the hours of 3 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, September 9th, in the parking lot area of Baytowne Apartments.  A window of the vehicle was broken, and property, including a purse and its contents, was stolen from the vehicle.  Debit cards from the stolen purse were used later that same morning to make purchases at several Champaign businesses.  Surveillance video from one of the businesses showed two male suspects attempting to make a transaction. 

The same two suspects later entered another business, and (again according to surveillance video) were accompanied by two black females.  The suspects also attempted to make a purchase at this business with the stolen debit cards.  Detailed descriptions of the black females were not available.  (Note that only one of the females is visible in the attached surveillance photos.)

Suspect #1 is a black male, approximately 35 to 45 years of age, 6’0, 200 lbs., wearing what appeared to be a black t-shirt and blue jeans. 

Suspect #2 was accompanied by another black male, also approximately 35 to 45 years of age, 5’10”, 250 lbs., wearing a distinctive baseball cap which was light blue on one side and dark blue on the other side, a long-sleeved rugby-style shirt with horizontal light blue and white stripes, and blue jeans.

Stolen Credit Card Used in Champaign

Champaign Police Department investigators are seeking assistance in identifying a suspect in the theft and unauthorized use of a credit card.

The victim reported on Thursday, September 13th, that her wallet was stolen from her backpack. A credit card contained in the wallet was later used to make unauthorized purchases totaling over $2000 at CVS Pharmacy, located in the 200 block of West Mattis Avenue, Champaign. Attempts to use the credit card were made at other local businesses, but the card was declined.

Residential Burglaries

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance regarding multiple residential burglaries.

Between the dates of Tuesday, July 10th and Wednesday, September 12th, over ten residential burglaries have been reported in the “Scottswood” area of Urbana Township. These burglaries have been occurring in the area primarily east of Dodson Drive and west of Scottswood Drive, and south of Glenn Drive and
north of Nevada Street.

These burglaries have been occurring during daytime hours when residents are not home. The suspect(s) usually gain entry from the rear of the residence (the side of the residence facing away from the street) by entering via an unlocked window. In some of the burglaries, if no doors or windows were found unlocked, the suspect(s) forced entry into some of the residences.

Bank Robbery in Urbana
September 09, 2012

The Urbana Police Department is seeking information about the identity of a subject who robbed the First Financial Bank on South Philo Road on Saturday, September 1st, at 9:22 a.m.

The offender was described as a black male, approximately 38 years old or older, 6’2” tall, 200 pounds, wearing a black and red Chicago Bulls ball cap, a tan Carhartt coat, dark shirt, and dark sweatpants. The suspect appeared to have a thin mustache and possibly some hair on his chin. (See photos.)

No weapon was displayed during the robbery. After the robbery, the suspect was observed getting into the passenger side of a gray four-door car that was parked across the street from the bank. The car then left the area.

Aggravated Battery at House Party
September 01, 2012

Champaign Police investigators are seeking information regarding an incident of aggravated battery that took place on Saturday, August 25th, shortly after midnight.

Officers responded to a fight at a house party in the 600 block of south State Street. Upon arrival, officers observed the male victim, who was unconcious and bleeding from the head. According to witnesses, the victim had been punched by another male who was attending the same party. The victim fell from a retaining wall (approximately two feet tall) and landed on his head on the concrete sidewalk.

The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and is currently hospitalized with a brain injury resulting from the aggravated battery.

The suspect is described as a dark-skinned black male, 6’0” tall, muscular build, short hair, wearing a striped shirt and baggy pants. The suspect possibly goes by the nickname or street name of “Mellow D”.

Credit Card Fraud

The Champaign Police Department and Crime Stoppers are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying three female suspects in a case involving credit card fraud.

The victim reported that he misplaced his debit card on Tuesday, July 10th. On July 11th and 12th, the debit card was used by three unidentified female  suspects to make fraudulent transactions at local FedEx, CVS Pharmacy, Dollar General, and Wal-Mart stores.

According to store surveillance video, the suspects consist of two black females and 1 white female. If you have any information regarding the identities and/or whereabouts of the suspects, please contact the Champaign Police Department or Crimestoppers.
